This project has two types of programs which will encourage young people from our communities to actively participate in their agricultural and food systems. In 2020, the targeted RCMs are Deux-Montagnes, Mirabel, Thérèse-de-Blainville and Argenteuil, where several partners have already been contacted.
This program aims to reach participants in regional youth centres (9-17 years old), secondary schools (12-17 years old), and Carrefours Jeunesse Emploi (16-25 years old) in the targeted RCMs. It is a program, dedicated to preadolescents, adolescents and young adults, focussing on practical learning in professions related to agriculture, development of environmental awareness and citizen and professional empowerment.
Through visits to farms in the region as well as their participation in the maintenance of the educational garden plot, the youth will be involved in all stages of vegetable production, such as: seedling production, crop maintenance, biological pest control and field management. They will also be called upon to participate in surplus harvesting activities in the field (agricultural gleaning), in various food processing activities (canning, lacto-fermentation, dehydration), as well as in zero waste reduction and the sale of their processed products. Organized in local markets, these sales will allow young people to self-finance their experience by raising a minimum of $300 in revenue.
The program requires youth to have a minimum of 40 hours of involvement between May and November, leading to a certificate of hours worked with the organization.
In addition, throughout the season, thematic workshops and conferences will be given by specialists in the bio-food environment, exposing young people to the realities and professions of the milieu! For example, meetings with seed companies, specialists in vegetable production, beekeepers, agronomists and researchers in the preservation of heritage animal breeds will be organized! École-O-Champ will ensure the implementation of the program within the RCMs as well as the general coordination related to the project activities.
The program in brief
The agricultural training program is offered to students aged 12 to 17 in high schools. The formula respects the school's programs and targeted learning objectives while adapting to the specific facilities and projects of each establishment. Given as a series of diversified educational workshops, several concepts can be presented such as planning a vegetable garden, seed germination, maintenance and needs of plants, crops, transformation and conservation of crops as well as the development of a market. With the ability to be spread out throughout the school year, these activities are overseen by the agricultural education specialist, whose mission is to educate and guide young people towards upgrading their own skills about food autonomy. With the collaboration of the teacher, these classroom workshops aim to introduce youth to the agricultural world, a world that is essential for all of us!
